Fort Worth Opera Ball Honorees

Fort Worth Opera Ball Honoree:
Whitfield J. Collins
In Recognition of His Many Years of Outstanding
Service
Whitfield Collins was born in Dallas. He obtained his
undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Texas in
Austin and a Master of Laws from Harvard University Law School. He
was an attorney with the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue
Service, and served on active duty with the United States Naval
Reserve, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander, serving as
Assistant Administrative Aide to Chief of Naval Operations, Fleet
Admiral Chester Nimitz.
Mr. Collins has been in private practice with Cantey & Hanger
for 54 years. He was presented the Blackstone Award from the
Tarrant County Bar Association in 1995, and a Special Recognition
Award from West Texas Legal Services in 1999.
An active supporter of the arts, Mr. Collins has served on
several boards, including the Fort Worth Opera, Fort Worth Symphony
Orchestra, Van Cliburn Foundation, Modem Art Museum and the Arts
Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. He is immediate past
Chairman of the Board for the Fort Worth Opera and a past
President of the Arts Council. He has been on the executive
committee for most of these arts organizations.
Mr. Collins has also served on the boards of the All Saints
Health Foundation; Radiation and Medical Research Foundation of
the Southwest (the operator of the Moncrief Radiation Center);
Fifth Avenue Foundation; C.J. Wrightsman Education Fund, Inc.; T.J.
Brown and C.A. Lupton Foundation, Inc.; Tarrant County Bar
Foundation; and the NonProfit Service Center. He has been an
officer of most of these organizations.
Mr. Collins works tirelessly for his favorite not-for-profits.
The Fort Worth Opera has continuously called upon him for his sage
advice and community contacts. He finds it difficult to say "No,"
and the opera has been consistently willing to take advantage of
his generosity. At last, we are able to say "THANK YOU" in a
public way, even at the risk of embarrassing one of our most
beloved board members.
